Delhi Zoo (Chidiya Ghar)

“Children's hotspot”

The National Zoological Park (originally Delhi Zoo) is a 176-acre zoo near the Old Fort in Delhi. The Zoo was set up in the year 1959. It was built after the Indian Board for Wildlife felt the need of having a Zoo in the capital as recreational facility for the people. Earlier it was called Delhi Zoo. It was in 1982 that the park was given National status and came to be known as The National Zoological Park. The Zoo now provides shelter to almost 1,350 animals and birds of 130 species from around the world. It has a plethora of reptiles, mammal and birds belonging to countries like Africa, Australia, and America apart from India.

White tigers are the main draw at Delhi's zoo. There are many other noteworthy animals roaming around, such as emus, gazelles, chimpanzee, hippopotamus, spider monkey, African wild buffalo, Giraffes, Gir lion, and Zebras, and a great many deer.

This zoo provides good opportunity for bird-watchers and students to get a glimpse of migratory birds in their near-natural environment at the zoo. Migratory birds, including painted storks and shovelers, come to this from various parts of the country, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The zoo gets migratory birds usually by the last week of October every year.

This is one of the hotspot for the visitors in the national capital. The zoo can be seen on foot or using a battery-operated vehicle which can be rented at the zoo. Visitors are not permitted to bring any food other than drinking water, but canteen facility is available in the zoo. School children and groups of families are frequently seen visiting the park for picnics.
