Kali Bari Mandir

Goddess Of Time And Change

The Kali Bari Mandir has always sees a steady stream of devotees flooding in on a daily basis come rain or sunshine. One is left mesmerised  when looking at Goddess Kali decorated with jewels and clasping the Trishul in her hands.

The Kari Bari Mandir is located on the Mandir Marg in Connaught Place. It is the centre of the Bengali Culture. It is located close to Bangla Sahib Gurdwara and Birla Mandir and was introduced in the 1930s. A few Bengali devotees who felt the need to establish the abode of Goddess Kali installed a blue wooden idol of Goddess Shyamala.

The Goddess is prayed to different forms within the temple’s areas. The main incarnations at the temple are of Bhadrakali, Chinnamasta, Rudrarani, Tara, Chamunda and Uma. Goddess Kali holds an important place in Bengali devotional literature and in several tantric or spiritual activities.  She was spoken about in the ancient religious texts of the Rigveda and earned prominence as a Hindu deity in the Puranas. She is considered as a “Jagrat” or in simple words awake goddess by her followers.

She is worshipped by the Hindus across the world and portrays feelings of removing all evil from Earth. The idol of the deity is bestowed with flowers, vermilion, sweets and goats. Tourists visiting Shimla are attracted to the religious importance of Kali Bari Temple. They travel on foot to get to the shrine. Built during the British era, the temple is thronged by devotees during Navratri and Kai Puja.
