“Temple of Laxminarayan”

The Laxminarayan Temple also known as the (Birla Mandir) is a Hindu temple dedicated to God Laxminarayan. This beautiful temple is located in the west of Connaught Place.

Laxminarayan usually refers to Vishnu, Preserver in the Trimurti, also known as Narayan, when he is with his consort Lakshmi. The temple, inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi. At that time, Mahatma Gandhi kept a condition that people of all castes especially the untouchables will be allowed entry into the temple. Hence this temple welcomes all without discrimination of any sort.

It took some six years to complete its construction. The construction work started in the year 1933 and was completed in 1939, after which it was thrown open to visitors.

This temple was built as an initiative of B.R. Birla and Jugal Kishore Birla, the well-known business tycoons. Being built by the Birla family, the temple is also known as the Birla Temple.

The architecture of the temple seems to be inspired from the Orissa style. The temple has tall curved towers, the highest tower reaching a height of 165 feet while the auxiliary towers reach 116 feet. Inside the temple premise there is an exhibition hall cum shrine The Geeta Bhawan, dedicated to Lord Krishna. The entire hall is embellished with paintings depicting scenes from Indian Mythology. There is another temple within the complex housing Lord Buddha.

The temple is one of the major attractions of Delhi and attracts thousands of devotees on the Hindu festivals of Janmashtami and Diwali. The Birla Temple is a landmark in the history of modern Indian architecture. One must not miss this site while on a tour to Delhi.

Open: 4:30 am to 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm to 9:00 pm
