Chandni Chowk Market Delhi

Chandni Chowk Market

“Shopaholics’ Paradise”

Chandni Chowk is one of the oldest and busiest shopping hubs in Old Delhi, built around 17th century by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The Emperor’s daughter Jahan Ara contributed in designing of this market. Once the market was divided by canals (which are now closed) to reflect the moonlight, hence named Chandni Chowk.

The shops around the complex were built in a half-moon shaped pattern, which cannot be seen today due to a bamboozling horde of shops and vendors overlapping every inch of the area. As the era of Shah Jahan was famous for silver artifacts and merchants. This could have been an important aspect in designing the nomenclature of the market as silver in Hindi is called ‘Chandi’. This word could have been slightly altered to name Chandni Chowk.

Substituting the pool in the chowk, there had been a clocktower (Ghantaghar) that was present till 1950s. The central location of this place is still known as Ghantaghar.
