Organ donation saves 24-year-old's life

A 24-year-old male, who at 18, suffered from a renal failure has now got a new lease of life. The donor was a 61-year-old male, who lived near Heera Panna in South Mumbai.

"The donor, who had a known history of hypertension, suffered from a brain bleed at his home and collapsed suddenly. He was in the hospital for two days following which he was declared brain dead," said Dr Sabina, senior manager, medical administration at Saifee Hospital. While the donor's family had heard about organ donation it took a while for them to agree to it.

While the donor's one kidney went to the 24-year-old, who was already on the waiting list at Saifee Hospital, another kidney went to a recipient at the Fortis Hospital. The donor's corneas were sent to the eye bank. "The kidney recipient is doing well. He received a kidney once but his body rejected the organ. He then had to go back on dialysis," Dr Sabina said.
