"Sangeet Natak Academy- Witness Cultural Perseverance"

Sangeet Natak Academy in New Delhi was established on 31st May 1952 by the Indian Education Ministry. It is famous as the National Academy for Dance, Music, and Drama organized in English. In simple words, it's a national-level academy for arts.

Although it was incepted in 1952, it became operational in on 28 January 1953 when Dr. Rajendra Prasad inaugurated this academy. The first chairman of the Sangeet Natak Academy was Dr. P. V. Rajamannar.

It operates as the headquarters of the performing arts all through India. It not just lends a hand in preserving the cultural heritage of India, but also encourages different forms of dance, music and drama.

Various institutions and projects of national importance are managed under its banner that include:

  • National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi in 1959
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal.
  • Kathak Kendra (National Institute of Kathak Dance), New Delhi in 1964

Other Operations Include:

  • It gives grants to aid research, documentation as well as publishing in the performing arts .
  • National Projects in the support of Kuttiyattam (the age-old Sanskrit theater of Kerala)
  • Fortifying the cultural contacts between different regions of the country and overseas.
  • It documents as well as records the performing arts for the audio-visual archive.
  • It organizes as well as financially aids seminars/ conferences of subject specialists.
  • Supports the functions of institutions related to performance or promotion of music, dance, teaching and theater.
  • Rendering advices as well as help to the Government of India to formulate and implement policies as well as programs in the related field.

It also offers some famous awards and fellowships under the name “Sangeet Natak Akademy Awards”. These include Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puruskar, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, and 'Ratna Sadsya'.
